What does a music video actually do for the artist?

First and foremost, it can change a way an artist is looked at by their fans and critics along with creating a persona. It also increases the knowledge of the song/album along with increasing the knowledge of the artist. Depending on the song you can also see the artist in a different light which can widen the artists fan base. This also increases the bond between the artist and audience as you can connect with the artist on a 'personal' level. Also if the lyrics are hard to comprehend you can show a story of the lyrics. Another thing that music videos does are that it means that the artist has to attend less interviews, saving time for the artist while still getting exposure on TV.

Types of music videos...

Performance Based
A good example of this is the music video for 'Edge Of Glory by Lady Gaga'. These videos are focused entirely on the artist of the song whilst performing 'live'. They usually have a variety of close up shots.

Narrative Based
These are the videos that use actors and the artist (not all the time) to tell a story but stories are often limited to the song. A good example of this is the music video for 'La La La Ft. Sam Smith by Naughty Boy'.

Concept Based
These music videos are normally creative music videos based around a certain concept or idea and normally they may or may not feature the artist. More often than not, they are unique in one way or another and are common in today's world of modern music videos. A good example of this is the music video for 'Electric Feel by MGMT'.

At this point, I think I'm edging towards the idea of performance based music video as I like the idea of having that 'close' feel with the artist. It also generally works well with most songs.

Research

I will be using YouTube for my main research along with music channels to provide me with inspirations for my own music video that I'll be producing. YouTube is also the medium that saved music, as only since its arrival of YouTube in 2005, that newer artists with a lower budget could use as a free distribution of their music.

Introduction

I'm Diwas and this is where I'll be recording my A2 Media coursework. I will have to create a promotion package for the release of an album which will include a website for the band, a digipak for the albums release and a magazine advertisement for the digipak and of course a music video. I'm currently 17, I like a lot of different genres of music so I don't really have a favorite genre, which makes it a little harder to focus down on to a specific artist or even genre to produce my music video on. The idea of making a music video, at first, was quite daunting for me but having had time to think about it I am looking forward to the task. It will be a great opportunity to test and add to my skills and also try out new techniques and learn more about music videos. The 'action plan' for the next week and onward is to familiarise myself with blogger and its features, start to investigate and analyse music videos.
